A Free Fortune is Peace

Fortune

Write a new post in response to today’s one-word prompt.

The word fortune is a powerful word. When it is read or heard, that not so subtle message goes straight to the ‘I need’, ‘I want’, human greed cells in the brain. From a monetary standpoint, a fortune is something desired by almost all, at one level or another. Most people would love to have enough fortune to allow them a life of leisure, a life without worry, of want for anything.
A fortune teller might be consulted in a quest for fortune, of the time element becomes overwhelming.

There was a time many years ago when a millionaire would send checks out to people, it even caused people to check their mailboxes with extra anticipation. Today there is a new TV, advertising, magazine promotions that give people $5,000 a week for life. That should be enough to satisfy most people. Millions of people do not want to take a chance on waiting for a knock on the door or a letter in the mailbox. Gambling and gaming have become so lucrative, governments even promote gambling casinos. People take their paychecks there to seek a fortune, most leave forlorn and fortuneless.

Fortune seekers can become slaves to their businesses, with a hope of becoming wealthy. The desire to attain their fortune through their own wisdom and hard work can destroy them. Many people find their Fortune this way, at the expense of health and family. Their desire for a self-made fortune overpowers them.

Many times in my life, I have thought about fortune. I feel very fortunate to have been born into a family where there is no fortune to be handed to me, inherited, or easily gained. I would have to change my whole life. I would start by changing my political affiliation to conservative, surround myself with new political, power people, to help protect my fortune from liberals who would hand it out to anyone and everyone who thinks they are in need.

I would have to hire an investment broker or two to manage my fortune so it could continue to grow, more is never enough. I would no doubt have many sleepless nights waiting for the stock markets to open when the evening news did not look appropriate. It just seems to me, a fortune would cause much more worry and grief than it would be worth.

Some people receive a fortune through winning the lottery and their lives are quickly ruined by overindulgence. People receive small fortunes by winning on game shows. With my luck, if I got on the Wheel of Fortune show, the wheel would stick when I spun it. A ZONK awaits me on Let’s make a Deal. If I ate at a Chinese restaurant my fortune cookie would probably have a blank piece of paper in it.

All of that leaves me thinking, I will just be happy with the circumstances that I have. If we learn to live our lives so we can find happiness in all circumstances, that is a fortune that is more valuable than diamonds, gold or any other valuables, even overleveraged investment portfolios.
