DAILY PROMPT

“Democracy, or democratic government, is “a system of government in which all the people of a state or polity … are involved in making decisions about its affairs, typically by voting to elect representatives to a parliament or similar assembly,” as defined by the Oxford English Dictionary.[1] Democracy is further defined as (a:) “government by the people; especially : rule of the majority (b:) ” a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections.”[2]
“According to political scientist Larry Diamond, it consists of four key elements: (a) A political system for choosing and replacing the government through free and fair elections; (b) The active participation of the people, as citizens, in politics and civic life; (c) Protection of the human rights of all citizens, and (d) A rule of law, in which the laws and procedures apply equally to all citizens.[3]”
The United States is not supposed to be divided, it was created as a democratic form of government. When the last president was elected almost 7 and 1/2 years ago, the party in opposition to his election vowed they would do absolutely nothing for the next eight years that would make that president look good. They would not pass any bills that he had proposed or that his party had proposed. Is it any wonder the nation staggers along divided today? The politicians voluntarily gave up their rights to rule the government by majority. They chose to build a solid wall of partisan politics. Let the country wander on its own, with out leadership from congress. Now the harvest of what was sown, will be reaped as they choose their party candidate for president in 2016.
We are now almost to the end of this presidential election cycle. Is it any wonder that this election has turned in to what looks like complete chaos? All of the “my way or the highway” gang are having head on collisions. Politics in general and our whole political system has become like an X-rated movie. It has become so nasty and mean-spirited the citizens have become complacent. They quit taking part in elections at every level, city and state, to the federal. The majority should rule in our government. The majority have been taking themselves out of the democratic process by not voting. People have dropped out of decision-making and just left it up to someone else. That someone will soon be a minority.
A divided government will not endure. United we stand divided we fall.
